The best source depends on where the video already lives and how long the QR code needs to remain useful. A public viewing page is usually easier for phones than a large video file.

For a long-lived poster, package or manual, use a stable URL you control or a dependable video host. If you only need YouTube-specific options, the YouTube QR generator is the more focused tool.

How to create the QR code

  1. Paste a complete public video URL, or choose an MP4, WebM, OGV or MOV file up to 35 MB.
  2. Optionally add a working title for your own reference in the form.
  3. Choose a high-contrast colour and an optional instruction frame.
  4. Select Generate QR code.
  5. Open the returned destination and scan the preview before downloading the QR artwork.

The title field does not change the video, destination or downloaded QR image. The destination link is what the code stores.

Does the QR code contain the video?

No. This generator places the video’s URL inside a static QR code. A phone reads that address and opens it through a browser or compatible app. Playback then depends on the host, its privacy settings, the internet connection and the scanner’s device settings. Scanning does not guarantee autoplay.

Public and private video links behave differently

A public YouTube or Vimeo page should be tested while signed out. An unlisted link may open for someone who has the URL, but it should not be treated as private. A private or organisation-restricted video can still ask the scanner to sign in or refuse access.

A direct file must be reachable without your hosting account or an expiring session. LatestQR uploads also receive a public URL. The project treats generated uploads as temporary, so use your own stable hosting for anything that must keep working after printing.

Can you change the video after printing?

The downloaded code contains one fixed destination URL. If you control that address and replace the content behind it without changing the URL, the same QR can continue to point there. If the destination URL changes, generate and print a new code. This page does not turn a video link into an editable dynamic QR code.

Before printing

  • Scan the final artwork on more than one phone when possible.
  • Test from the distance and lighting people will actually encounter.
  • Use a dark pattern on a light background and preserve the clear margin around it.
  • Open the destination while signed out of your own video account.
  • Try mobile data and verify that audio, captions and orientation work as intended.
  • Check that the host has not blocked, removed or restricted the video.

Make the experience understandable without guessing

Print a short description such as “Scan to watch the two-minute setup video” beside the code. Add captions or subtitles where possible and provide a readable fallback URL or instructions. If the video contains essential information, consider an accessible text version rather than making the video the only route. Can I create a QR code for a YouTube video?

Yes. Paste the public or shareable YouTube URL into the video URL field, generate the code and test it while signed out before printing.

Will a private YouTube or Vimeo video work?

The QR code can open the link, but the video host still enforces its permissions. A private or restricted video may require an authorised account or may not play for the scanner.

Can I use a direct MP4 link?

Yes, if the complete HTTP or HTTPS URL is publicly reachable. Test its loading time, browser playback and mobile-data experience before sharing it.

Can I change the video after printing the QR code?

Only if the encoded URL stays the same and you can replace the content behind that address. If the destination URL changes, create a new QR code.

Do video QR codes expire?

The static QR pattern has no built-in expiry, but its destination can stop working if a video is removed, restricted, moved or stored at a temporary URL.

Are videos uploaded to LatestQR private?
